AREDS – Age Related Eye Disease Study
The AREDS study was sanctioned by The National Eye Institute (NEI) division of the National Institute of Health.
The AREDS studies main conclusion was:
“Antioxidant Vitamins and Zinc Reduce Risk of Vision Loss from Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Same Nutrients Have No Effect on the Development of Cataract
This was a foundational study that has become famous for its contribution to Ocular Nutrition and the Eye Vitamin industry.
Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of the NEI said “This is an exciting discovery because, for people at high risk for developing advanced AMD, these nutrients are the first effective treatment to slow the progression of the disease,”.
Individuals with a high risk of developing advanced stages of AMD lowered their risk by 25%.
Individuals within this same high risk group that had intermediate AMD, or advanced AMD in one eye but not the other eye educed the risk of vision loss caused by advanced AMD by about 19%.
Those that had the reduced risk were all treated with a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc.
